The party was established in 2004 with the most prominent
figure in it being Zdravko Tomac who for a long time was
preparing the secession from SDP. In
the 2005 local election it formed the coalition with HIP. The flag is described in the
Statutes: red with the white initials HSD in the middle and the
inscription "hrvatski socijaldemokrati" in the canton.
